Synopsis
Iruvar is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language epic political drama film co-written, produced, and directed by Mani Ratnam.
The film stars Mohanlal, Prakash Raj, Aishwarya Rai, Revathi, Gautami, Tabu, and Nassar, with Nassar playing dual characters in his first screen appearance.
Set against the backdrop of cinema and politics in Tamil Nadu, the film is inspired by the lives of M. G. Ramachandran, M. Karunanidhi, and J. Jayalalithaa.
The high-budget film features an original soundtrack composed by A. R. Rahman and cinematography by Santosh Sivan.
Mohanlal makes his debut in Tamil cinema after a cameo in Gopura Vasalile, marking the beginning of his journey in the language.
Iruvar was screened at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival and won several awards, including the Best Film award at the Belgrade International Film Festival and two National Film Awards.
