Synopsis
Kannagi is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed by Yashwanth Kishore in his directorial debut.
The film stars Keerthi Pandian as Kannagi, alongside Ammu Abhirami, Vidya Pradeep, and Shaalin Zoya.
The story follows four women whose lives are dominated, crafted, and judged by society and affected, changed and disturbed by external influences. One of these women is Kannagi, a legendary figure from the Tamil epic Cilappatikāram.
Kannagi's husband, Kovalan, is wrongfully accused and punished without due process, prompting her to prove his innocence and protest against the injustice. Her quest for justice leads to a curse that brings retribution upon the city of Madurai, resulting in its destruction.
The film features music composed by Shaan Rahman, cinematography handled by Ramji, editing done by K.Sarath Kumar, and was announced on 17 August 2021 with the reveal of the first look and title. Filming commenced in 2021, and the trailer was released on 2 December 2023.
