
Thambi Durai is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Senthilnathan.
The film stars Saravanan, Sukanya, and M. N. Nambiar.
The story is based on real events that took place at Irukkangudi and revolves around Thambidurai (Saravanan), a poor boatman who falls in love with Shenbagam (Sukanya), a rich girl being tortured by her stepmother.
Thambidurai and Shenbagam elope, get married, but their happiness is short-lived as Shenbagam's uncle plots to separate them with the help of a womanising landlord. The duo approaches a sorcerer who indulges in black magic, leading to Thambidurai's near-death.
Thambidurai is presumed dead, but he is taken care of by a priest (Shanmugasundaram). Shenbagam's grandmother and Thambidurai's grandfather are murdered by the same group. The film follows their struggle for survival and justice.
The film was completed in 1994 but released on December 5, 1997.
