Edhir Neechal is a 1968 Indian Tamil-language comedy drama film directed by K. Balachander.
The ensemble cast includes notable actors such as Nagesh, Muthuraman, Sundarrajan, Srikanth, M. R. R. Vasu, Sowcar Janaki, and Jayanthi.
The screenplay is based on Balachander's own play of the same name, which itself was inspired by Sombhu Mitra's work 'Kanchanranga'.
The story revolves around Maadhu, an orphan who survives through odd jobs to afford his education at college. He lives precariously by sleeping under the stairs of a multi-family tenancy complex where he works, receiving shelter and food in lieu of rent.
Upon its release in December 1968, the film achieved commercial success and earned K. Balachander the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer.
