
Amarkalam is a 1999 Indian Tamil-language romantic action film written and directed by Saran.
The film stars Ajith Kumar and Shalini in the lead roles, with Raghuvaran, Radhika, and Nassar in supporting roles.
Ajith Kumar plays Vasu, a tough street crook who lives at a movie theater. He clashes with Mohana, the daughter of Police Commissioner Birla Bose, while transporting reels of a new film. Vasu is hired by an ex-gang leader, Tulsidas, to kidnap Mohana for two days.
During her captivity, Mohana falls in love with Vasu after hearing him sing. However, Vasu rejects her love, and Tulsidas pays him to pretend to be in love with her. As time passes, Vasu's feelings for Mohana become real, but it is too late when Tulsidas learns his true intentions.
The film was Ajith Kumar's 25th film and released on August 15, 1999, to positive reviews from critics. It was remade in Telugu as Leela Mahal Center and in Kannada as Asura.
