About Priya

Priya is a 1978 Tamil action thriller movie with Rajnikanth and Sridevi at the lead. The movie was based on the original story written by writer Sujatha which was published in the Tamil weekly magazine Kumudham.

The story is about Priya (Sri Devi) a famous Tamil actress who asks the help of a leading lawyer Ganesh (Rajinikanth)  to help her get rid of her guardian who is blackmailing her and controls her financial and personal affairs. When Ganesh accompanies Priya for a film shoot to a foreign country she gets kidnapped by a gang and the rest of the story is about how Ganesh orchestrates her rescue from the kidnappers.

When S.P. Muthuraman made that into a full length Tamil movie he roped in Panchu Arunachalam to do the screenplay and dialogues for the movie. While Sujatha's original story was written with London as the backdrop, the film adoption had the location was changed to Singapore.

Ilayaraja scored the music for the movie with Panchu Arunachalam writing the lyrics for all songs. For the first time ever in Tamil music history, the songs were recorded in Stereophonic quality in K.J. Yesudas's Tarangani studios. There were a total of five songs in the movie and four of them were sung by Yesudas himself.
