Theri is an action thriller film directed by Atlee and produced under V Creations. The movie stars Vijay as Vijay Kumar, a former cop who loses his family to a ruthless politician and their associates.
Vijay's mission becomes clear: he must completely change his identity to protect his daughter from the dangers posed by his past enemies. However, this new life is fraught with unforeseen circumstances that ultimately compromise its safety.
Forced to reveal his true identity amidst these complications, Vijay's path shifts towards avenging his family's death. The film also features Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson, and Nainika in key roles.
The movie was marked by Atlee's second directorial venture after Raja Rani (2013), with the script developed into an "emotional action thriller" by Atlee. The music was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, while George C. Williams handled the cinematography and Ruben edited the film.
Theri is loosely inspired from the 1990 Tamil film Chatriyan and 2013 Hollywood film Homefront. A formal announcement of the film was made in September 2014, with a formal launch ceremony in June 2015, followed by production in Chennai in early July.
