Vedham Pudhithu is a 1987 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed and co-written by Bharathiraja.
The screenplay was adapted from a play titled Saadhigal Illaiyadi Papa by K. Kannan, who also wrote the dialogues for the movie and became known as Vedham Pudhithu Kannan.
The film stars Sathyaraj in the lead role, with Saritha and Amala playing significant parts alongside supporting performances from Raja, Charuhasan, Nizhalgal Ravi, Janagaraj, and Master Dasarathi.
The story centers on an atheist who becomes the son-in-law of a Brahmin woman, leading to catastrophic consequences due to societal prejudice, particularly concerning the rigid caste system prevalent in their village.
Vedham Pudhithu was released on 27 December 1987 and became highly controversial for its critical portrayal of Tamil Brahminism and its associated hypocrisies. Despite this, it achieved significant success both critically and commercially, winning three Filmfare Awards South – Best Film (Tamil), Best Director (Tamil) and Best Actor (Tamil) for Sathyaraj – as well as two National Film Awards.
