Vaaranam Aayiram is a 2008 Indian Tamil-language action drama film written and directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and produced by V. Ravichandran of Aascar Films.
The film stars Surya in the main dual lead role as father and son, alongside Simran, Sameera Reddy, and Ramya.
Music for the film was composed by Harris Jayaraj, and cinematography was handled by R. Rathnavelu with editing done by Anthony.
The storyline follows Suriya, an Indian Army Major who learns about his father Krishnan's death on a rescue mission, prompting him to reminisce about their bond and share stories related to his father.
The film opens with the father Krishnan's romance with Malini (Simran), which is contrasted with the son's aggressive courting of an engineering student Meghana (Sameera Reddy). The romance is followed by an extended period of professional and personal uncertainty, in which the son turns to father figures for help.
The film was inspired by Menon's life when he heard about his father's death in 2007, serving as a tribute to him. It is reportedly autobiographical about the director's own relationship with his father.
