Punnagai is a 1971 Tamil-language buddy drama film directed by K. Balachander from his own screenplay, serving as a remake of the 1969 Hindi film Satyakam.
The story revolves around college friends Rajbabu and Sathya, among others like Rajan, Mandiramoorthi, and Haniff. Following an incident involving Haniff's car crash that leads to his death, their paths diverge: some succumb to corruption while Sathya remains true to his principles.
He encounters Kanchana, a young woman who has been raped and is now pregnant, and decides to marry her and raise the child as his own. The film stars Gemini Ganesan, R. Muthuraman, Nagesh, M. R. R. Vasu, and Jayanthi.
The story is narrated by Rajbabu, who wants to write a book on the life of his friend, Sathya. The film was released on 5 November 1971.
