Moondram Pirai is a 1982 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film directed by Balu Mahendra and produced by G. Thyagarajan and Saravanan through their Sathya Jyothi Films.
The film stars Kamal Haasan as schoolteacher Cheenu and Sridevi as Viji, a mentally deranged woman rescued from a brothel. Filmed primarily in Ooty and Ketti with additional scenes shot in Bangalore, the movie follows Cheenu's efforts to protect Viji at his hillside home while she regresses into a childlike state.
As Viji recovers her memory with Cheenu's help, her father Vedachalam searches for her, and the police become involved after tracking them down via information from a co-passenger or an Ayurvedic practitioner. The film explores themes of love, protection, and redemption as Cheenu struggles to keep his feelings in check while Viji becomes devoted to him.
The movie features supporting roles by Y.G. Mahendran, Silk Smitha, and Poornam Viswanathan, with music composed by Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics written by Kannadasan, Vairamuthu, and Gangai Amaran. It was released on 19 February 1982 and received critical acclaim.
