Synopsis
Karpagam is a 1963 Indian Tamil-language drama film written and directed by K. S. Gopalakrishnan, marking his debut in the industry.
The ensemble cast includes Gemini Ganesan, Savitri, S. V. Ranga Rao, M. R. Radha, R. Muthuraman, V. K. Ramasamy, V. Nagayya, Karikol Raju, Sheeladevi, K. R. Vijaya and Baby Shakila.
A rich farmer entrusts his newly married daughter (played by K. R. Vijaya) and her husband (Gemini Ganesan) to live in his house and manage his business affairs. Complications arise when the farmer's estranged son (portrayed by R. Muthuraman), who returns, begins squandering the family fortune.
The film was released on Diwali day, November 15, 1963, and achieved significant commercial success, running for over 100 days in theaters. It earned critical acclaim by winning the National Film Award for Best Feature Film (Certificate of Merit) as the second-best Tamil film.
