
Indian is a 1996 Indian Tamil-language vigilante action film directed by S. Shankar and starring Kamal Haasan in dual roles.
The film follows Senapathy, a retired freedom fighter who rebels against corruption in India, as he joins the Indian Liberation Army and later becomes embroiled in a personal conflict with his son Chandru.
When Senapathy's daughter Kasthoori is grievously hurt in a house-fire, the family faces a series of challenges as they try to access medical care. This sets off a chain of events that leads Senapathy to take revenge on corrupt officials, unaware that his own son is now part of the system.
The film features a cast that includes Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Sukanya, Manorama, Goundamani, Senthil, Nedumudi Venu, Kasthuri, Nizhalgal Ravi, and Ajay Rathnam. The music was composed by A. R. Rahman, with cinematography and editing handled by Jeeva and B. Lenin-V. T. Vijayan.
Indian was released worldwide on May 9, 1996, and became the highest-grossing Tamil film upon release. It won three National Film Awards, including Best Actor for Kamal Haasan, and was selected as India's entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the Academy Awards in 1996.
