A wealthy man entrusts his motherless daughter, Padma, to his friend Somanathan Pillai shortly before his death, asking him to marry her to Jagadish upon reaching maturity. Pillai takes this request forward, marrying Padma off as promised while also forcing another marriage for his own son Jayapalan (to Saroja). This leads to unhappiness for both young couples.
During a storm, Jayapalan tragically loses his eyesight due to alcoholism stemming from his misery. The story concludes with the intervention of a sacred sadhu who resolves all conflicts.
