Ezhai Padum Padu is a 1950 Indian Tamil language film directed by K. Ramnoth and simultaneously produced in Telugu as Beedala Patlu.
The story is an adaptation of Victor Hugo's novel Les Misérables, revolving around Police Inspector Javert who recaptures a small-time criminal named Kandhan after his escape from prison.
Kandhan reforms his life with help from a Christian Bishop and upon release starts a successful glass manufacturing company. He eventually becomes the mayor of his town under an assumed identity.
When Javert discovers Kandhan's success, he threatens to expose him. However, after being saved by Kandhan in a dangerous situation, Javert commits suicide out of gratitude, unable to turn Kandhan back into the authorities.
The film was released on Diwali day and produced by S. M. Sriramulu Naidu of Pakshiraja Studios. N. Seetharaman is notable for his memorable portrayal of Javert in this film.
