Chirai (also known as Sirai) is a 1984 Indian Tamil-language drama film directed and written by R.C. Sakthi.
The story revolves around a Brahmin woman who becomes pregnant after being raped by an alcoholic man, leading to her husband disowning her and significant conflict for the protagonist.
Produced by Mohan under Anandhi Films, the film features Lakshmi and Rajesh in its lead roles, with Pandiyan, Ilavarasi, Prasanna, S.S. Chandran, V. Gopalakrishnan, and Isari Velan supporting them.
The film was photographed by Vishwam–Nataraj using minimal sets against actual locales, including scenes shot at Vauhini Studios.
Based on Anuradha Ramanan's 1980 short story of the same name, Sirai follows a Brahmin woman who develops an attachment for her rapist after being encouraged by a police constable.
The film was released on 22 November 1984 and received critical acclaim, particularly for Lakshmi's performance, despite criticism from some Brahmin organizations who demanded it be banned.
