Synopsis
Azhiyatha Kolangal is a 1979 Indian Tamil-language coming-of-age drama film directed by Balu Mahendra. The film stars Shoba and Pratap Pothen, with Kamal Haasan playing a guest role.
The story follows three friends who live in a small village as they navigate the events of their adolescence. The film is partly autobiographical and explores themes of nostalgia and friendship.
Balu Mahendra wrote the screenplay and shot the film, marking his second directorial venture in Tamil. Azhiyatha Kolangal was released on December 7, 1979, and received critical acclaim upon its release.
The film was screened at the "Indian Panorama" of the International Film Festival of India in 1980 and has since become a spiritual successor to the 2019 sequel, Azhiyatha Kolangal 2.
