Arthanaari is a 1946 Tamil-language film directed and produced by T. R. Raghunath.
The story revolves around Bhagavathi (M. S. Saroja) and Punyavathi (M. V. Rajamma), princesses of the fictional Gandhara kingdom, who have lost everything due to misfortune and now live near the Ganges riverbank. Their husband, Vijayavarman (P. U. Chinnappa), a prince himself, is imprisoned after being overthrown.
Vijayavarman plots his escape and revenge against the usurpers, while the princesses contemplate committing suicide by drowning in the Ganges. A sage witnesses their attempt, saves them, and advises seeking the blessings of Ardhanarishvara as a source of faith and strength. Vijayavarman is later rescued by a friend and manages to defeat the usurpers.
The film stars P. U. Chinnappa, T. R. Ramachandran, M. S. Saroja, and M. V. Rajamma, with N. S. Krishnan, T. A. Madhuram, and Kali N. Rathnam playing supporting roles.
